![]() Friday, Novemat Matthews Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Ft. Alfie has six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Alfie is survived by daughter Linda Halford, a veteran of the Viet Nam war and husband Gene Davison of Springfield, Mo., sons Brian of Edmond and wife Lisa Rudolph and Randy and wife Louise Pope Ledger. He is preceded in death by his wife Myrtle, son Alfred Jr., daughter Carolyn and son Darrell. and lived with son Brian, a veterinarian, and Brian’s wife Lisa where he continued to love and care for animals. When his health began to fail he moved to Edmond, Okla. where he enjoyed retirement and a love for animals. After sending his son to Texas A & M University he moved to Mannford, Okla. Hood, Texas, and he then became quartermaster for Allen Military Academy in Bryan, Texas. After returning from Korea he transferred into the Quartermaster Corps (supply) for the remainder of his career. Later he was again stationed in Korea but his duties also took him into Viet Nam with the general staff. He again served with the combat engineers during the Korean war. After the war was over, he was part of the rebuilding effort in Germany, eventually returning to the US to raise a family. On September 23, 2007, the beloved husband of the late Mary L. ![]() He served with General Patton’s units relieving Bastogne, in the Battle of the Bulge eventually serving on Gen. He was involved in combat throughout WWII as a combat engineer in the North African and Sicily campaigns and was in the third wave at Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. ![]() He enlisted in the Army after Pearl Harbor and went to Ft. After graduation from high school he went to work at the local steel mill. He was a very good athlete with baseball his favorite and was comparable to the present day Eagle Scout in the 1920s. He was known by family and friends as “Alfie” and as “Bud” from his earlier years growing up in Norristown, Pa. Saturday November 19, 2011, having succumbed to cancer and pneumonia. Alfred Thomas Matthews, III, 87, of Salisbury, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, May 15, 2023. He loved woodworking and spending time with his pets. He was a life-long member and Deacon at Morningside Baptist Church which he loved dearly. Alfred “Matt” Matthews, 84, of Morristown went to be with the Lord Monday, May 10, 2021.
